Solo Project

This poster focuses on photography and graphic design to create compositions around the story of a unique object. The project focuses around a jack planer, a woodworking tool used to shave and scrape wood. From there, much of the project surrounds the connotative and denotative history of the item. Significant research has been done about the jack planer in preparation for this project, including ancient and modern history. These historical elements were built into the graphic design on top of the photography. Several challenges faced during this process were taking professional photography and expanding upon the connotative meaning of the object using connotative reasoning that still connects to the history.

The biggest takeaway learned from this was how to integrate the semiotics of type into photography. Learning how to utilize the new techniques, such as software and photography, to tell the history of a personal item was challenging, but was overcome through thorough research and critique. The project also highlights how much thought and meaning can be drawn out of an everyday tool when it is studied closely. It further demonstrates the importance of the design process and how visual storytelling can preserve the history of even the simplest objects.
